The chartered DHL plane carrying OpUSA
medical aid landed at Queen Alia Airport, Amman, Jordan on April 26. The
official consignee of the cargo was the Noor al-Hussein Foundation in Amman
founded by Jordan's Queen Noor. The Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization
facilitated customs clearance and provided storage space until it could
be transported to Baghdad.
OpUSA Board member Charlie Moed and
Technology Programs Officer, Naomi Wyles, travelled to Baghdad on April
28 to prepare for the transhipment of the OpUSA cargo from Amman. OpUSA's
Los Angeles-based partner, International Medical Corps (IMC), conducted
a preliminary hospital needs assessment and is responsible for overseeing
the distribution of the supplies to hospitals in Baghdad.
On May 2, after an eleven-hour journey across the desert, our cargo arrived in Baghdad and was transferred safely to IMC's warehouse. IMC, which currently has forty staff in Iraq, has already begun distributing the supplies to:
- Baghdad Pediatric Hospital
- Al-Karama Hospital (Baghdad)
- Al-Wasiti Hospital (Baghdad)
- Nasaria General Hospital (Nasaria)
- Nasaria Maternal and Child Care Hospital
- Amara General Hospital (Amara)
- Al-Kut General Hospital (Al-Kut)
- as well as to 90 Primary Health Centers throughout the country.
